![]() ![]() Almost as if to prove its never un-stylish status, Mary Janes appeared in at least four different guises in the Spring/Summer 2020 season alone, on the runways of Maison Margiela, Marc Jacobs, Moschino, and Prada. On the flipside, it’s also taken on a subversive identity at times with stacked creeper-style soles and studded details added for a punky edge. It’s been through upheavals in the form of show-stopping embellishments, block heels, and candy-colored patent uppers. What was once a prim shoe, given the royal stamp of approval by a young Queen Elizabeth II, has been immortalized by ‘60s dream team Mary Quant and Twiggy, by celebrities as diverse as Beyoncé, Chloë Sevigny, and Naomi Campbell-and by the silver screen’s ever-stylish Cher Horowitz in Clueless. ![]() The true beauty of an enduring classic is, however, is that it maintains its relevance by reinventing itself with each era. The understated shoe has been popular since the early 1900s and interestingly, until the ‘50s, it was just as common a style for men as it was for women. There are some footwear silhouettes that never go out of style, and Mary Janes are one of them.
